Portrait Photography
A tribute to heritage, told through light and gold.
A portrait series exploring adornment, memory, and the quiet dignity of tradition, created with models and artisans from Boston's Ghanaian community.
“Every bead and fold carries a story older than the photograph itself.”
— Kwasi Agyekum
The Idea
Culture & Story began as a simple question: what does it mean to carry your heritage into a portrait? Working with models, jewelry, and textiles drawn from West African tradition, this series sets out to honor adornment not as costume, but as inheritance — each piece chosen for the story it already carries. Shot over a single afternoon in natural window light, the series leans into warmth and stillness, letting each subject’s expression, rather than the setting, carry the weight of the story.

The Medium
Every piece of jewelry was sourced for its history, not its shine, and styled by hand between frames. We worked with a single north-facing window for the entire sitting, trading studio strobes for something slower and warmer.
The Process
Selecting the jewelry, fabric, and palette before a single frame was shot.
One afternoon, one window, and a lot of patience between poses.
A restrained edit that keeps skin tones warm and true, letting the jewelry catch the light rather than the retouching.

“This is more than a photograph. It's a preservation of story.”
